This built-in unit was an interesting project. The left-hand unit was designed to house books or other objects in the lower section and objets d'art in the upper section. Xenon lights recessed into the top provide lighting, with the tempered glass shelving allowing the lighting of the middle shelves. Although the asymmetrical layout of the shelving provided several technical challenges, the construction itself ended up being fairly straight forward. The depth of this case is 14 inches. The credenza portion of the built-in (see image below) is flush in the front with the book/display case. However, they are set into the half wall below the granite breakfast counter top, and are 22 inches deep. Also, the right section of the credenza needed to be angled to meet the wall at the end of the knee-well. Off course, the difference in depths created a 6-1/2 inch space to the left of the credenza that could only be 14 inches deep. What to do with that wasted space? Well, 6 bottles of wine store in there quite nicely! Lastly, the door panels were covered with rattan caning, like you’d find on a chair. And yes, we did it all in-house. |
